Good Books for 2-4 year olds beyond the usual stuff

Here are some of the books we have been reading and we love them. We got them from the library and some of them seem popular based on Amazon reviews, but some seem relatively rare. I would love advice on other good books, so please add!

  1. ABC : A child’s first alphabet book. Author: Jay, Alison : This book has lovely illustrations and each page is devoted to an alphabet. Each page usually has an animal, but also a range of other objects starting with that alphabet and its a fun puzzle to try to find all objects with A on a page. ( for example, panda, picnic, pear etc). The objects are all part of the illustration or story and not just pictures put out there.
  2. Going on a Journey to the Sea: Author : Barclay, Jane : A poem and illustrated book about a boy and his sister going on a trip to the sea and having a blast. Seems to remind one of simple things in life! My son kept wanting to do things with his sister after this one!
  3. Cool Time Song: Author:Schaefer, Carole Lexa. This one is about animals in Africa and how they welcome Africa. A nice song at the end to set to any tune and sing. Links how animals make ‘songs’ with their hoofs etc to the story.
  4. The lot at the end of my Block : Author : Kevin Lewis. Maybe this is a boys story, but shouldnt be! It shows how a building is being built at the end of the block and each page ends with ‘the lot at the end of my block’ which kids love to chant to
  5. Little Polar Bear finds a Friend: Author: De Beer, Hans : A beautiful book which provides a look into the other side of the zoo – how animals are captured and helps kids understand their plight. I dont know why I think that should be good, but I do think kids should realize that the zoo is not the natural habitat of animals and they have lives they left behind. Anyway, the story does have a happy ending and is about a brave polar bear and teaches kids lots of new words.

Please let me know how you like these or others we can read! I will keep an updated list for all.
