Have you tried making Idli or Dosa in U.S?
Hey bloggermoms!! Recently I have been having a craving to have Dosa /idli.. No I am not pregnant.
I got the Gits Dosa and Idli Mix and made it..It turned out horrible. Next I tried the Periyar Idli Mix .That also turned to be bad.The idlis were so hard that it could have been used to play baseball/cricket.
One of my friend told me to get the table top grinder. She had it for a while ..Its very good and it wont take up space. I was debating to get it or not..
2 weeks ago, I had a party and was cleaning my basement. Hiding in a corner was my Preethi blender/mixi that I got when I went to India 2 years back. It came with 3 bowls. One a long one , another one a juice extractor and a small bowl to grind coconut..I always used the small one..When we moved , I had misplaced it.
The long bowl has a sharp blade that can be used to grind rice and urid dal.
Lat weekend , I decided to try it .
On Friday night, I got 4 cups of rice. I soaked it in water and Also soaked 1 cup of urid dal in a seperate vessel.
Saturday morning, I put the rice first in the blender. After it became mushy, I took it out and put it in a big vessel. Then I put the urid dal in the blender. After that also became mushy, I mixed it in with the rice in the big vessel.
I put it in oven to ferment. I turned ON the light.and waited the whole Saturday .
Sunday Morning!!!
I opened up the oven..It had doubled the volume. I poured it in the idli maker.
Vola!!!The idlis turned out to be soft and tasty. I used the rest of the flour to make Dosa. I put some fenugreek on it for the dosa to turn slight red/pink..
I m so happy…Finally my dream came reality..I can make dosas/idlis at home..:-)

Hi Smitha,
One looks like an empanada looks sooo good, getting hungry again!
Win, Dosa and Idlis is a common breakfast in South India. You eat it with Sambar /chutney.
Smitha- The pics do look good…You made me hungry too:-)
I got the tabletop grinder. Its really good..it worked out better than the mixi.
Rajini- Where did you get the tabletop grinder from?
I got it from India. There is a store in Hyderabad where they convert the plug to make it work here.
These looks like Chinese rice cake? Does it taste the same?
