My Favorite Picture Books for Children
I love books and I wish I had the access to children’s books that my kids have today, when I was growing up. There is a treasure of children’s books out there and I am enjoying every bit of it with my boys, almost as much as they do.
My favorite picture book authors are Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein and David Wiesner. Dr. Seuss for his rhymes and whimsical characters, Shel Silverstein for his vivid imagination and humorous poems, and David Wiesner for his ability to tell a story without the use of words, he definitely proves “A picture is worth a thousand words”. You cannot go wrong with any book of theirs, even though I have only listed a couple for each of them.
Below is a compilation of my and my boys’ favorite picture books. These are gems that we love either for the imagination, message, illustrations or humor and in some cases all of it bundled together. These are ideal for 4 to 8 year olds but like I said, enjoyable for all ages!
So without further ado, in no particular order, the list:
- The Giving Tree By Shel Silverstein
- Flotsam
By David Wiesner
- Bartholomew and the Oobleck
By Dr. Seuss
- Black and White
By David Macaulay
- Officer Buckle & Gloria

This is a great list, especially since I have not read most of them. I will find the names and authors of the ones I like and add them when I get home. Thanks!
Great list Neelam, Have not yet read any of these books to my kiddo. His favorite books so far are Goodnight Moon – By Margaret Wise Brown and Snuggle Puppy – By Sandra Boynton.
The Great Big LIttle Red Train and the Runaway Train – by Benedit Blaithwyt. All of Byron Bartons books were great from age 1 – 2: Trucks, Trains, My Car, Airport.
What a great resource, Neelam! Makes me want to be a child again – but as you say, no reason why an adult couldn’t buy all these books and enjoy too!
