Quick and Fun Breakfast Ideas for the Picky eaters
No matter what their age, it can be a real chore to lure kids to the breakfast table! And we all know that kids who eat breakfast are more attentive in school, are more likely to participate in physical activities. Probably the easiest breakfast to prepare is the ‘ready-to-eat’ cereal with milk, but it is always nice to offer other healthy substitutes a few times a week so that the kids won’t get bored of eating the same breakfast daily.
Here are a few breakfast ideas which work for my boys;
1. Yogurt dippers- Cut some fruits/veggies into small chunks and have your kid dip them into flavored or plain yogurt.
2. Ants on a log- My boys love this one. Cut a banana into half and spread peanut butter/almond butter/apple sauce over it and sprinkle some raisins over it.
3. Roti wrap/Burrito – Just wrap some leftover vegetables/chicken pieces , sprinkle some cheese and microwave for a few seconds, cut into half and serve with ketchup.
4. Pizza bread- This again is a favorite. Spread some pizza sauce or ketchup on whole wheat/whole grain bread slices. Put some leftover veggies/meat/deli and sprinkle some cheese and bake in the oven for 5 minutes or until the cheese melts.
5. Breakfast taco – shredded cheese on a tortilla, folded in half and microwaved and top with salsa
6. Fruit and cream cheese sandwich (use strawberries or other fresh fruit on whole grain bread)
7. Sandwich shapes- grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, deli or another favorite…cut with cookie cutters into different shapes to make them more attractive.
8. Pita pockets- Fill the pita bread with leftover veggies or make it sweet with some fruits and maple syrup.
9. French toast- Beat the egg(s) and put a teaspoon of sugar (or salt, garam masala, cumin powder if you don’t want to make it sweet) and dip the whole wheat bread slice in it. Shallow fry it until it turns golden brown. Serve with fruits and berries (or with ketchup/salsa for the salty version)
10. Frozen veggie patties on bread- Microwave or bake frozen (or fresh) potato tikkis/veggie patties and decorate with ketchup. I usually make a lady bug with red dots with a line in the centre ( put on a brown bread slice).
11. Smoothie/Fruit Lassi- Blend fresh fruits like banana/strawberries/blueberries/mango in milk or yogurt in a blender for 1 minute, pour into a fancy glass, top with some granola …breakfast is ready.
Please feel free to suggest some more breakfast ideas that work for your kids.

Yasmin, great ideas! I think my son will like the Ants of a log too and I want to try the fruit – cream cheese sandwich. I think I will like that a lot. We mostly do cereal but sometimes do pancakes (Aunt Jemima whole wheat blend) and mix in applesauceor blueberries or mashed bananas.
Thanks, Khushi. My boys are very picky…will not eat oatmeal (or anything too mushy), they prefer dry cereal and will drink milk separately from the cup. They dont like eggs…making me work even harder to find new breakfast options. I am looking forward to reading more blogs on ‘healthy breakfast options’…as I constantly run out of ideas.
thanks .. these are good
I liked the “ants on a log” the best…….really innovative..
Thanks, Sarmila and Malini.
Yasmin, Every time I read your posts I get a sense that you use a lot of creativity in raising your children. That’s really great!
Tana, Thanks for such a wonderful comment… you made my day!
Thanks Yasmin for all the suggestions. Breakfast off late has become a tug of war with my son. I am confident these will help a lot.
Hi,
much to my woes and tricking them does not seem to have worked – really need help with some more suggestions! A worked up with with her kids food habits!
this is the first time i’ve come across this site – and i happened to log on as I was getting desperate running out of ‘fun’ ideas for kids eating. My 6 yr old daughter finds food very boring and my one year old son drives me nuts esp. for breakfast options – he just does not seem to like anything! Unfortunately neither of them like cheese and paneer
